Phu Yen News reporter engaged in an interview with Dr Ha Van Sieu, Deputy Director of the National Tourism Administration, regarding the strategic direction for developing tourism as a key economic sector in the province, on the occasion of his visit to Phu Yen.

* Doctor, could you provide an overview of the recent developments in tourism in Phu Yen?

 - According to assessments from the state management specialized agency of tourism on a national level, in general, it is evident that Phu Yen tourism has undergone positive changes in recent years, exceeding the national average.

Efforts to enhance planning and investment in Phu Yen have led to significant improvements in technical facilities, service infrastructure, and the diversity of tourism products. Awareness of tourism in the region has significantly increased, contributing to the establishment of a distinctive Phu Yen tourism brand. Known as the land of yellow flowers and green grass, Phu Yen is emerging as a favored destination for travelers, with many of its landmarks and tourism offerings becoming widely searched terms among potential visitors.

Statistics and reports show that tourism in Phu Yen is an increasingly important contribution to the province's economic structure. This impact is evident not only in visitor numbers and total tourism revenue but also in the broader cultural integration of tourism into the social fabric of the region. Over time, tourism has not only spurred economic development but has also cultivated a sense of pride among residents as they welcome streams of tourists to Phu Yen.

* The Phu Yen Provincial Party Committee has launched Action Program 09 on investment in tourism development for the period 2021-2025, with the objective of establishing tourism as a key economic sector by 2030, so far achieving significant outcomes. How would you evaluate this action plan?

- We commend the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, and PPC for their focused attention and guidance on the provincial tourism sector through this action program. Phu Yen has effectively embraced and implemented the government's directives as outlined in Resolution 82 and Directive 08 from the Prime Minister, which advocate for a comprehensive, effective, and sustainable approach to tourism restoration and development.

Specialized agencies advising the PPC have closely followed the context of the recent period, including overcoming the pandemic. They have focused on identifying solutions that position tourism as a key driver for socio-eco recovery and development. 

Under the consistent and drastic leadership and direction of the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, and PPC, relevant sectors have collaborated effectively with the Culture, Sports, and Tourism sector. As a result, Action Program 09 has obtained results that meet and exceed the set requirements.

This clearly underscores those 3 issues: first, the execution and methods for implementation; second, a demonstration of political resolve; and third, the results achieved. Although the outcomes have not been as expected, it is very encouraging and highlights the importance of continued investment in tourism development in the economic structure of the province and the tourism map in relation to localities in the country.

* Given the current context and emerging trends in tourism development, what strategic investments should Phu Yen need to ensure effective planning and alignment with its development goals?

- Entering a new era characterized by national outreach, on the basis of the draft action program for the coming period, closely following the guidelines and spirit of directing the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council and PPC as well as properly assessing and adapting to the new trends of domestic and international tourism, Phu Yen tourism needs to focus on continuing to innovate institutions and raise awareness of tourism development, implementing the strategic orientation of Vietnam's tourism development to 2030 with a vision to 2045 and the tourism system planning for the period to 2030, with a vision to 2045, in which enhancing the quality of the tourist experience remains central.

Phu Yen needs to establish its own strategy grounded in market research, an understanding of tourist demand, and slow living pace practices that enjoy quality services and life experiences, etc.

Developing a model of tourism products that showcases the unique characteristics of Phu Yen requires a sustainable approach that promotes a distinct "Phu Yen" lifestyle. This lifestyle embodies the essence of “Phú” - bold, profound, rich in experiences, and diverse - alongside “Yên”, which conveys harmony, tranquility, and a balanced relationship between nature and people.

The province should conduct the balance, sustainability, and effectiveness of development investment projects, ensuring that accommodations and real estate developments are aligned with initiatives that enhance the ecological and cultural values of Phu Yen. Simultaneously, this includes enhancing visitor experiences through diverse offerings such as entertainment, exploration, agricultural tourism, craft villages, events, and sports. Furthermore, it is essential to invest in software such as technology applications, promotion, market access strategies, and human resource training.

Proposals and projects prioritizing the development of the action program and plan should avoid being overly dispersed and instead clearly delineate the government's responsibilities in focusing on infrastructure projects that enhance accessibility and on developing policy mechanisms that facilitate and encourage private investment. Moreover, it is essential to ensure alignment with objectives and functions, prioritize green and sustainable projects, promote local culture, and incorporate technology applications.  

Phu Yen needs to implement key projects such as infrastructure, technology, human resource development, and community support; it is essential to identify tourism products and leverag advantages. For Phu Yen, the critical factors for tourism product development include its rich culture, coastal and island assets, distinctive cuisine - particularly ocean tuna - and notable national landmarks such as Da Dia Reef, etc. It is advisable to engage professional consultants to develop projects, enhance promotional efforts to attract investment, and appoint a general director to oversee the province's tourism development program.

Furthermore, the province needs to synchronize product development with destination promotion; product development of enterprises must cooperate with destination promotion of the province; establish a roadmap for the upgrade of Tuy Hoa Airport to facilitate international connectivity.
