OCOP elevating agricultural products

Through the implementation of the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program, Phu Yen has achieved notable results, creating opportunities for local agricultural products to establish their presence in the market. Thanks to the program’s widespread impact, many agricultural products have been further invested in and developed into OCOP-certified items, contributing to improved rural economic efficiency and increased income for local residents.

The focus of the OCOP program is to develop agricultural, non-agricultural, and service products with local advantages based on value chains, with the private and collective economic sectors playing the leading role, implemented with a focus on harnessing internal resources and increasing product value. As such, OCOP has also been regarded as a solid foundation for building new-style rural areas in Phu Yen in recent years.

Mr. Ho Van Nhan, Deputy Chief of the Provincial New Rural Development Coordination Office, stated that the Phu Yen PPC has issued an implementation plan for the OCOP program for the 2021-2025 period. The plan aims to further improve the quality of OCOP products, unlock the potential and advantages of rural areas, increase local incomes, and contribute to the restructuring of the agricultural sector in connection with handicrafts, rural industries, and tourism. Simultaneously, the plan also aims to preserve cultural values, protect rural environmental landscapes, and promote digital transformation; develop various models of production and business organization, thereby contributing to a deeper, more effective, and sustainable new-style rural development.

As one of the exemplary cooperatives in developing OCOP products, the Dong Din General Agricultural Cooperative (Phu Hoa District) currently has nine products certified with 3- to 4-star OCOP ratings, including pineapple fruit, pineapple cakes, pineapple vinegar, and pineapple wine. According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Chuong, Director of the Cooperative, participating in the OCOP program has helped their products gain market acceptance, leading to increased value for their agricultural produce. However, the cooperative has not stopped there. It continues to invest in upgrading its certified OCOP products to match or surpass those from other provinces, especially to meet the growing demands of consumers. The cooperative is currently refining and developing new agricultural products to diversify and enrich its portfolio of OCOP-branded offerings.

As of now, the province has had 390 products certified under the OCOP program, affirming their brand reputation and credibility in the market while generating significant economic benefits for production and business households. However, despite being an agricultural province, Phu Yen still has a relatively low number of products meeting OCOP standards compared to other provinces. Therefore, under the 2025 OCOP Program Implementation Plan, the province aims to have at least 50 additional products certified with a 3-star OCOP rating and 2 products with a 4-star rating.

According to Mr. Mai Ne, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tay Hoa District, the district aims to have 22 products certified as OCOP products in 2025. Moreover, 70% of the products will be distributed through modern sales channels and will receive support for upgrades and improvements (labeling, traceability solutions, packaging, brand management, website development, and product testing,etc.). In the coming time, the district will continue to strengthen communication about the OCOP program, with a focus on enhancing the capacity and efficiency of OCOP producers. The focus will be on enhancing the capacity and effectiveness of OCOP producers; strengthening promotion, trade facilitation, and market linkage activities; coordinating training programs to improve management and marketing skills; and encouraging OCOP entities to engage in trading their products through modern sales channels.

In order to ensure the effective implementation of the OCOP Program in the coming period, Ms. Dang Thi Thuy, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment and Vice Chairwoman of the Provincial OCOP Product Evaluation and Classification Council, stated that the Council will issue mechanisms and policies to support the application and innovation of science and technology, as well as infrastructure development tailored to local conditions. The OCOP Program will also be closely integrated with the agricultural restructuring program, rural economic development, and new-style rural development throughout the province. Furthermore, support will be provided to cooperatives and businesses to improve productivity and product quality, establish and register intellectual property rights, enhance the value of evaluated products, and promote e-commerce as a channel for OCOP product sales.
