Speaking at a press conference following the conclusion of the 46th ASEAN Summit and related meetings on May 27, PM Anwar attributed his optimism to the ongoing discussions and an unprecedented level of commitment demonstrated by member states during the summit. He noted that much of the groundwork for the next summit had already been laid, paving the way for concrete regional results.
Elaborating further, he said the consensus among ASEAN leaders had significantly bolstered efforts to address the Myanmar crisis. He pointed to meaningful progress, with parties engaging in lower-level consultations aimed at extending ceasefire agreements and facilitating humanitarian aid.
On trade and tariff negotiations, he acknowledged ongoing bilateral talks among some ASEAN member states but stressed that ASEAN leaders had agreed that any decisions must not undermine or harm the interests of any member country.
